Got my copy of MacOS 8.5 today (finally!). Something’s not quite kosher with this install (I hope), becuase the system is sorta slow and crash prone. I’ll try to re-install stuff this weekend…

I got Netscape working on my Linux setup, which is way kewl. I started a seperate Linux page, which I’ll be updating from my Linux setup, using only Linux tools — this is a way for me to force myself to learn vi and emacs and in general check out Linux text editors. I’ll see ya over there…

I’ll get the Linux page (and other dependent pages) added to the sidebar this weekend too

Almost a week since my last update. You might think that I’ve been playing with MacOS 8.5, or fixing up the OneClick pages, but you’d be wrong. Friday night, I finally picked up a copy of the MkLinux reference release (DR2.1), which I installed on my 7500. Saturday, I ran into work, downloaded DR3, and bootstraped the install of of a external hard drive. I managed to get pppd working, although I still need to work on getting the modem to disconnect. Today, I complied Window Maker and it worked!. Yeehaw! Expect to see a lot more Linux stuff on this site, as I get up to speed.

I also went to tonight’s TFUG meeting. It was cool — I met another Mac Linux person. He’s running LinuxPPC so maybe I’ll try that distribution too.

My geek quotient went up about an order of magnitude this weekend!

Next up: Pick up some themes, some dockapps, and get Netscape working.

It’s Tuesday. No MacOS 8.5. This is beginning to get a little disturbing…
What’s going to happen first? I get MacOS 8.5, or Westcode Software releases the updater to make OneClick 8.5 compatible?

The One Click section of this site is crying out, begging for an update. Maybe this weekend…
So many interesting projects, so little time…

I was in the lab real late last night. I came up with several ideas for interesting little writings, rants, what have you, but I forgot to write them down, and so now they’re lost. Maybe if I stay in the lab until 3 am again tomorrow night, I’ll think of some of them again…

Webmonkey says “Fear the fat pipe”.

Cam was pointing at a cool essay about Children of the 80’s, but his site’s not responding, so I can’t steal the link. Bummer.

This disc, by Guided by Voices, is one of the best pieces of music I’ve heard in years. Every song (all 24 of ‘em!) on this album makes my soul cry out in joy. Stop what you’re doing, close this browser window, and go buy this disc. Thanks.

There’s one of those frighteningly complete fans sites for GBV at, naturally enough, www.gbv.com

Well, the Apple Demo Days went ok, and I got to meet some cool people, but I’m one of the unfortunates who didn’t yet get their free copy of MacOS 8.5. It’s supposed to be here by Tuesday. We’ll see…

Not a lot to going on around here. I spent the later part of last week head down on various science stuff (which didn’t work) and various web stuff (which I can’t show you). Didn’t even get to rent any good movies this weekend…

Psst — hey buddy — wanna buy a 286? That’s right, those 4 hunks’o'junk I just purchased turn out to be IBM PS/2 30’s. They also came without power cords, and I haven’t been motivated enought to shut-down my Mac (to steal it’s cord), so I don’t know if any of them work yet. At the very least, I figure I got some spare SIMMS and hard drives, for when I do get a Wintel box. Oh well, there’s always next month’s surplus auction…

If I could just find a cheap SCSI external, I’d just buy this book, and get it over with…8^D

The 1998 IgNobel prizes have been announced.

Well, I’ve finally added the HTML fragment for the OneClick Web Ring to the appropriate pages on my site.
I wonder how many hits I’ll be getting?

Of course, my palettes have been completely re-designed by now! Most of the underlying scripts are the same, but the palettes look quite different, as you can see in this screen shot (48 K) of Frontier, or this screen shot (63 K) of Netscape.

I also did a little work on the site template, simplifying things. Pages on the site should load a little faster. Let me know what you think -gt; jacobs@azstarnet.com

Yesterday, I got the good news that my visit to Museum of Abandoned Technology netted me 4 computers with monitors (@ US$10 each). Unfortunately, I can’t remember which lots were which anymore. I’m hoping these were the working 486’s. If that’s the case, I’ll sell two (or scavenge them for parts), leave Windows on a third, and install Red Hat Linux on the fourth. Of course, if I just bought 4 toaster Macs, I’ll be a little bit less excited. 8^D

How pissed am I? 5 hours of web work down the drain due to a crash. Can you say ‘Save often?’
Stoopid!

Who knew there was a book, let alone a mailing list?

Cam’s back, and he’s pointing a this article. Could be good advice for me…

well, the OneClick WebRing is getting started up. Now I just have to find the time to roll the HTML into the appropriate section of my site…

Hey, I’m doing a stint as a volunteer for MacOS 8.5 Demo Days on the 17th. I’m a sucker for a free polo shirt…

Wow, that means only 10 days until MacOS 8.5 is released…

updating from the lab tonight, as I wait for Northern blots to wash and Western blots to transfer…

I visited the Tucson branch of the Museum of Abandoned Technology today. If I was lucky, I bought some cool old crap. We’ll see…
