I start teaching again in a few days, so I’ve been trying to get the cobwebs blown out of that section of my brain. In the meantime, I’ve got around 25 open tabs in Firefox…

- My favorite cilated protozoan, Tetrahymena, has been sequenced — and, unsurprisingly, they turn out to be fairly complex beasties.

- We live in one of the richest sections of the country — which makes it really weird talking to people from back home; solidly middle class here is freaking rich there.
- Seen via Elf: Ohio is about to start up a no conviction required sex offender database — basically, a judge could declare you a sex offender, even if you haven’t been convicted of a crime. Avoid Ohio.

OMG, that is beyond true. I was talking on the phone with a guy from my HS class when he asked me how much our (modest) house was worth out (t)here in Las Vegas. The silence afterwards was palpable, and he’s college educated. (works in Topeka, lives in Osage City.)
